I wonder if other writers are influenced by unrealistic expectations and self-inflicted pressure when undertaking the task of revision. Do they also sit around, expecting ideas to land on their lap like so many butterflies on a spring day in a sunny meadow? Robins are nearby singing, not a cloud in the sky, and so on.

The Shape of Story
For a long time, I mistook nitpicking over individual words and sentences for substantive editing of my own work. But the task of managing the whole is an entirely different undertaking and the wide view can be overwhelming. There is so much to consider and the great stretches of seeming to be doing nothing can feel discouraging.
